Brief Biography:
Matthew Paul Walsh is known as a founding member of the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) sketch and improv troupe and for his Emmy-nominated role as Mike McLintock on HBO's satirical comedy series Veep.
Early Life and Education:
He played high school football and went on to major in psychology at Northern Illinois University. While in college, he took an interest in the Chicago comedy scene, studying improv and performing at local venues like ImprovOlympic and the Annoyance Theater.
Comedy and the Upright Citizens Brigade:
In the early 1990s, Walsh met Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, and Ian Roberts. Together, the four comedians founded the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). UCB became a massive force in the comedy world, leading to their own hit sketch comedy series on Comedy Central (1998–2000). Following the show's success, the group went on to launch highly successful UCB theaters and training centers in New York and Los Angeles.
Television and Film Career:
Walsh is a prolific comedic actor with dozens of television and film credits. He was a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (2001–2002) and gained widespread acclaim on HBO's Veep, earning two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He has a reputation as an "everyman" comedic actor and frequently collaborates with director Todd Phillips.
