Actor, stand-up comedian, musician, podcaster, YouTuber
Brief Biography:
Thomas F. Wilson is known for playing the iconic bully Biff Tannen (along with his ancestors and descendants) in the Back-to-the-Future film trilogy. He also famously voiced several characters in SpongeBob-SquarePants and played Coach Ben Fredricks on NBC's cult-classic series Freaks-and-Geeks.
Early Life and Comedy Beginnings:
He grew up in the nearby suburb of Wayne. During his time at Radnor High School, he was active in dramatic arts, played the tuba in the school band, and served as drum major. He initially studied international politics at Arizona State University with the goal of becoming a lawyer, but he ultimately discovered a profound passion for performing. He transferred to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he first stepped onto the stand-up comedy stage.
Move to Los Angeles and Back-to-the-Future:
In the early 1980s, Wilson relocated to Los Angeles to pursue comedy full-time, living with fellow aspiring comics including Andrew Dice Clay and Yakov Smirnoff. He secured coveted performance spots at the legendary Comedy Store. His breakthrough in acting came in 1985 when he was cast as Biff Tannen in Robert Zemeckis’ Back-to-the-Future. Wilson reprised the role in both sequels, as well as playing Biff's grandson Griff Tannen and his great-grandfather Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen.
Television and Voice Acting:
Beyond his live-action movie success, Wilson has built an expansive career in television and voice acting.
Live Action: He played McKinley High School's Coach Ben Fredricks on the critically acclaimed Freaks-and-Geeks (1999–2000).
Voice Acting: He is a staple in animation, prominently voicing Flats the Flounder, The Tattletale Strangler, and Cecil Star (Patrick's dad) on Nickelodeon's SpongeBob-SquarePants. He has also contributed voice work to Adventure-Time, Family-Guy, and Batman:-The-Brave-and-the-Bold.
Stand-Up, Music, and Painting:
Wilson never abandoned his roots in live comedy. He regularly tours the country performing stand-up. Because audiences so heavily associate him with his most famous cinematic role, his stand-up act frequently incorporates a musical comedy routine addressing the repetitive questions he receives about the film, such as "What was Michael J. Fox like?". In addition to comedy, Wilson is an accomplished painter known for his "Big Pop Fun" series, which focuses on classic pop-culture toys and objects. His art has even been showcased in the California Featured Artist series at Disneyland. He also hosted a popular podcast, Big-Pop-Fun.
