Brief Biography:
Charles Elmer "Rip" Taylor Jr. was famously known as the "King of Camp and Confetti". Renowned for his walrus mustache, wild toupee, and frenetic energy, he became a beloved pop-culture icon by throwing handfuls of confetti at audiences.
Early Life and Career Beginnings:
Taylor worked as a Congressional page before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. It was during his time in the military that he first began entertaining troops. Upon returning stateside, he started performing stand-up in clubs, strip joints, and resorts across the Catskills.
The "Crying Comedian:
"During a difficult nightclub gig, Taylor was performing to a silent room. In a desperate move to get a reaction, he began to cry and beg the audience to laugh. The bit was a massive hit and became his signature stage routine. This shtick caught the attention of Ed Sullivan, leading to nearly 20 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Television and Game Shows:
Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Taylor was a prolific television personality. He became a mainstay on ensemble game shows, frequently appearing on The Gong Show, Hollywood Squares, and The Match Game. He is also remembered for his flamboyant hosting of the 1978 pageant parody The $1.98 Beauty Show.
The Confetti King:
Taylor’s signature confetti routine happened entirely by accident on The Merv Griffin Show. When none of his jokes were getting laughs, Taylor angrily tore up his note cards and tossed the shredded pieces over his head. The audience loved it, and the prop became his permanent comedic trademark.
Later Years and Voice Acting:
Taylor enjoyed surprising versatility as an actor, playing dramatic roles (such as in the 1993 film Indecent Proposal), acting on Broadway (taking over for Mickey Rooney in Sugar Babies), and voicing characters in numerous cartoons like The Addams Family and DuckTales. He also endeared himself to younger generations by appearing in the Jackass theatrical films.
