He first stepped onto a comedy stage at the age of 17 at The Comedy Works in Philadelphia, initially performing as half of a sketch duo with the late Rick Roman. He briefly attended Temple University before dropping out to pursue comedy full-time, eventually relocating to Los Angeles in 1994.
Television & Film Career:
Shortly after arriving in LA, Tompkins co-created a live sketch show called The Skates. This caught the attention of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, leading to his hiring on the seminal sketch comedy program Mr. Show with Bob and David. He won an Emmy Award as part of the writing team for the show. Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Tompkins became a fixture on television as a regular talking head for VH1's I Love the... series and later took over as the host of VH1's Best Week Ever.
