Brief Biography:
Hal Sparks rose to fame as the host of E!'s Talk Soup and as Michael Novotny on Showtime's groundbreaking Queer as Folk, he is also well known for starring in Disney XD's Lab Rats and for his touring comedy and music shows.
Early Life and Stand-Up Beginnings:
At age 14, he moved to the Chicago area, where he attended New Trier High School and joined the theater department. A prodigious talent, he was named the "Funniest Teenager in Chicago" by the Chicago Sun-Times at age 17 and performed with the famed Second City comedy troupe before he even graduated.
Television and Film Breakthroughs:
After moving to Los Angeles, Sparks quickly became a fixture at major comedy clubs, including The Improv and The Comedy Store. His major television break came in 1999 when he was hired to host the Emmy Award-winning E! series Talk Soup. He transitioned into mainstream acting by starring as Michael Novotny on Showtime's Queer as Folk (2000–2005). On the big screen, he co-created and starred in Dude, Where's My Car? (as Zoltan), and made notable appearances in Spider-Man 2 and Extract. From 2012 to 2016, he endeared himself to a younger generation as the genius inventor Donald Davenport on Disney XD's hit series Lab Rats. He also directed several episodes of the show.
Comedy Specials, Music, and Political Commentary:
Sparks released his own one-hour Showtime stand-up comedy special, Charmageddon. In addition to stand-up, he is a dedicated musician and singer-songwriter who fronts the rock band Zero 1. He is also highly active in progressive political commentary, touring with the "Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour" and providing political insights across various cable news programs. In recent years, he has built a massive independent digital audience via live streaming and podcasting.
