Effie Smith played a key role in the mid-century West Coast Black entertainment scene. She rose to prominence as a multifaceted entertainer whose career spanned from the 1930s to the 1970s. She is best remembered for her popular comedy records, most notably her signature hit "Dial That Telephone," a humorous "jive talkin'" monologue routine first recorded in 1953 that became a major R&B hit in 1965.

Big Band Era: Performed as a vocalist with the Three Shades of Rhythm vocal group and appeared with the celebrated Lionel Hampton and Benny Carter orchestras.
