Brief Biography:
Emil Sitka was is recognized as a frequent comic foil in The Three Stooges short films. Often hailed as the "Fourth Stooge," he is famously remembered for his catchphrase, "Hold hands, you lovebirds!"
Biography & Career Highlights:
Sitka was orphaned by age 12 and raised by a priest in Pittsburgh. During the Great Depression, he rode the rails as a hobo before making his way to Hollywood in 1936 to pursue acting. He found cheap lodging in an acting theater, doing handiwork in exchange for rent and gradually landing stage roles.
Work with The Three Stooges:
Sitka became an indispensable comedic asset, appearing in dozens of The Three Stooges shorts and feature films. His versatility allowed him to play a wide variety of roles—such as a butler, professor, and justice of the peace. Notably, he is one of the only actors who worked on screen with all six actors who played a Stooge (Moe, Curly, Shemp, Larry, Joe, and Curly Joe). His most iconic moment occurred in the 1947 short film Brideless Groom. Playing a justice of the peace attempting to marry Shemp Howard, he repeatedly flusteredly yells, "Hold hands, you lovebirds!"
Almost a Stooge:
Sitka’s contribution to the troupe was so profound that in 1974, after Larry Fine suffered a stroke, Moe Howard asked Sitka to officially join the trio as the "Middle Stooge." Sitka even named his proposed character "Harry" (rhyming with Larry). Promotional photos were taken, but sadly, Moe passed away shortly thereafter before the new lineup could perform live, bringing the classic Stooges era to an end.
Legacy and Later Years:
Emil Sitka never fully retired from acting and transitioned smoothly into television and feature films, accumulating hundreds of credits. Later in life, he became a devoted ambassador for The Three Stooges, assisting with their Hollywood Walk of Fame star, attending fan conventions, and maintaining deep correspondences with the fanbase.
