Soupy Sales became a national icon in the 1950s and 1960s for his zany slapstick comedy and trademark routine of taking pies to the face, eventually becoming a regular fixture on game shows.

Education: Earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Marshall College (now Marshall University) in West Virginia.
The Nickname: He was nicknamed "Soup Bone" by his family (to match his brothers' nicknames "Hambone" and "Chicken Bone"), which was eventually shortened to "Soupy".
Career Start: Began in radio and local television in the Midwest, quickly building a loyal audience in Cincinnati and Detroit with his energetic, improvisational comedy.
Television Success and "The Mouse":
The Soupy Sales Show: Premiering in 1953 (originally Lunch with Soupy Sales), his show featured anarchic sketches, corny "Words of Wisdom," and iconic puppet characters including White Fang and Black Tooth.
The Pie Trademark: His shows famously ended with him taking a pie in the face. He is estimated to have taken thousands of pies during his career.
