Brief Biography:  Ajai Sanders gained widespread fame in the early 1990s. She is best known for her recurring role as the sharp-tongued, fashionable college student Gina Deveaux on the hit sitcom A Different World, which aired from 1991 to 1993.

Early Life & Career Beginnings:
Upbringing: She moved to Texas during her childhood and grew up in Dallas.
Education: Graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1985 at the age of 17.
The Leap: Moved to Los Angeles shortly after high school to pursue stand-up comedy. She was motivated by a fallout with her father, using his skepticism about her making it alone as fuel to succeed.

Breakout and A Different World:
The Audition: Her background as a working stand-up comic in LA landed her an audition for a minor, one-time guest spot on A Different World.
Role Expansion: Director Debbie Allen was so impressed by Sanders' raw comedic timing and character presence that she rapidly expanded her role.
The Character: What started as a single appearance turned into 5 episodes, then 18 the following season, eventually landing her a spot in the permanent opening credits. She ultimately appeared in 38 episodes.

Stand-up Comedy Success:
Def Comedy Jam: Sanders was a featured comic on the historic first season of Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam, cementing her status in the 90s urban comedy boom. She later appeared in the Def Jam 25th Anniversary Special.
Global Touring: As a prominent headliner and paid regular at legendary clubs like The Comedy Store, she has toured globally opening for and alongside icons like Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Jamie Foxx, and D.L. Hughley.
Phat Tuesdays: She is heavily featured in the Amazon Prime documentary Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy, which chronicles the influential all-Black comedy nights at The Comedy Store.
