Brief Biography:
Joe E. Ross was celebrated for his gravelly voice, bumbling persona, and trademark "Ooh! Ooh!" catchphrase. Best known for his starring role as Officer Gunther Toody on the 1960s sitcom Car 54, Where Are You?, he enjoyed a prolific career spanning burlesque, television, and voice acting.
Early Life and Burlesque:
Ross dropped out of high school to work as a singing waiter in the Bronx. He transitioned to comedy after being promoted to an emcee role, eventually building a decades-long career as a "blue comedy" and impressionist performer in burlesque and nightclub circuits.
Television Breakthroughs:
Ross made his major television breakthrough playing Rupert Ritzik, the bumbling mess hall cook, alongside Phil Silvers on The Phil Silvers Show (also known as Sgt. Bilko). This led to his most famous television role: the affable, slow-witted Officer Gunther Toody in Car 54, Where Are You? (1961–1963), where his chemistry with co-star Fred Gwynne (Officer Francis Muldoon) and exaggerated exclamations made him a pop-culture icon. Later television roles included Gronk the caveman in the 1966 prehistoric sitcom It's About Time.
Voice Acting and Later Career:
In the 1970s, Ross became a familiar voice actor in children's television. He provided voiceovers for Hanna-Barbera cartoons such as Sgt. Flint in Hong Kong Phooey and Botch in Help! It's The Hair Bear Bunch. He also continued performing stand-up comedy and releasing novelty records.
