Brief Biography:  Amy Poehler is best known for her star-making turn as Leslie Knope on NBC’s Parks and Recreation and for her influential, eight-year run on Saturday Night Live.

Early Life and Improv Roots:
Amy Meredith Poehler was born to schoolteachers Eileen and William Poehler. She was a self-described "drama kid" who discovered a love for performing during school plays. While attending Boston College, she joined the oldest collegiate improvisational comedy troupe, My Mother's Fleabag. Upon graduating in 1993, she moved to Chicago to dive headfirst into the city's booming improv scene. There, she studied at The Second City and iO (formerly ImprovOlympic) with comedy luminaries like Del Close. During her time in Chicago, Poehler met and became lifelong friends with fellow comedy icon Tina Fey. Together, they toured in the Second City Touring Company and eventually co-founded the legendary sketch comedy group Upright Citizens Brigade.

Upright Citizens Brigade:
In 1996, Poehler and three other UCB members—Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh—moved to New York City. Their live stage show gained massive traction and was adapted into a half-hour sketch comedy television series on Comedy Central in 1998. Although the show lasted for three seasons, the group went on to establish the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 1999. It became a premier breeding ground for emerging comedic talent and a major staple of long-form improv.

Saturday Night Live:
Poehler joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2001, midway through her first season. She became a breakout star known for her high-energy sketches, spot-on celebrity impressions (like Kelly Ripa and Sharon Osbourne), and fierce character work. In 2004, she was promoted to co-anchor of SNL's "Weekend Update" alongside Tina Fey, making history as the show's first all-female anchor team. Her work on the show earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She officially departed SNL in the fall of 2008 to prepare for her first child and to pursue new projects.

Television and Film Success:
Poehler achieved global recognition when she began starring as the fiercely optimistic and dedicated civil servant Leslie Knope in NBC's Parks and Recreation (2009–2015). The role earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 2014, as well as multiple Emmy and Critics’ Choice nominations. Outside of television, Poehler is a prominent figure in film. She famously starred alongside Tina Fey in the comedies Mean Girls (2004) and Baby Mama (2008). She has also lent her voice to major animated films, most notably as the emotion Joy in Pixar's Inside Out and its sequel, Inside Out 2.

Directing and Producing:
In recent years, Poehler has significantly expanded her role behind the camera. Under her production company, Paper Kite Productions, she has served as an executive producer for successful TV shows such as Broad City and Russian Doll. She has also stepped into the director's chair, making her feature directorial debut with the Netflix film Wine Country (2019) and later directing the Netflix coming-of-age movie Moxie (2021).
