Pinette initially pursued a practical career. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1986 with a degree in accounting. However, after just six months in the field, he took his friends' advice and left accounting to pursue stand-up comedy.

Pinette began touring comedy clubs in the late 1980s. His big break came in the early 1990s when he was invited to open for Frank Sinatra.
