Mo’Nique (born Monique Angela Imes) is renowned for her bawdy, unapologetic style, she rose to prominence as part of The Queens of Comedy tour and gained mainstream fame starring as Nikki Parker in the UPN sitcom The Parkers.
Early Life and Stand-Up Beginnings:
Born on December 11, 1967, and raised in Woodlawn, Maryland, Mo’Nique began her career on a dare. In 1988, at her brother’s suggestion, she performed at a local open-mic night at the downtown Baltimore Comedy Factory Outlet. The performance was a success, prompting her to leave her job in customer service to pursue a career in stand-up full-time. She quickly became a circuit regular, appearing on hit showcases like Showtime at the Apollo and Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam.
Television and Film Breakthroughs
Mo’Nique achieved massive success as a television actress, most notably starring for five seasons (1999–2004) as the ebullient single mother Nikki Parker in the hit UPN sitcom The Parkers. She then transitioned into films, starring in comedies such as Phat Girlz (2006) and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (2008). In 2009, she garnered critical acclaim and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her harrowing, dramatic performance as an abusive mother in the independent feature Precious.
