Brief Biography:
David Mirkin is best known for serving as the influential showrunner and executive producer during seasons 5 and 6 of The Simpsons, and for directing the hit comedies Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) and Heartbreakers (2001).
Early Life and Comedy Beginnings:
Mirkin originally planned to become an electrical engineer but later switched his focus to study film at Loyola Marymount University. Following his graduation, he started his career performing stand-up comedy at iconic Los Angeles clubs like The Comedy Store and The Improv.
Television Career and Cult Classics:
Transitioning into television writing in 1982, Mirkin quickly made a name for himself as an innovative writer and showrunner.
Three's Company: Wrote freelance scripts for the hit sitcom's eighth season.
Newhart: Served as executive producer, writer, and director, earning his first Emmy Award nomination in 1987.
Get a Life (1990): Co-created the surreal, dark Fox cult-classic sitcom starring Chris Elliott.
It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show: Contributed as a writer, consultant, and director across both critically acclaimed series.
The Simpsons Era:
In 1992, Mirkin joined The Simpsons as executive producer and showrunner for seasons 5 and 6. His tenure is celebrated by fans and critics for introducing a more surreal, weird, and deeply satirical edge to the show's humor. He notably penned the fan-favorite episode "Deep Space Homer," and has won multiple Emmy Awards as well as a Peabody Award for his contributions. He remains a prominent consultant and producer for the show and co-wrote the 2007 Simpsons Movie.
