Brief Biography:  Derek Mears is best known for playing iconic horror villains like Jason Voorhees in the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot and the titular character in DC’s Swamp Thing series. He has successfully used his comedic and improvisational skills to build an impressive Hollywood career.

Early Life & Comedy Beginnings:
Born in Bakersfield, California, Mears developed a severe case of the autoimmune disease alopecia at an early age, which caused him to lose almost all of his body hair. Despite being bald and notably tall, he channeled these traits and his natural stage presence into performance arts. Before transitioning to film and stunts, he started performing improv and sketch comedy at ComedySportz in Bakersfield and later joined the Los Angeles-based improv group The Resistance.

Stunt Work & Acting Career:
Mears got his Hollywood start by taking on minor roles and stunt work in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Because of his imposing physical stature and background in martial arts (including Karate, Taekwondo, and Krav Maga), he became a go-to actor for playing movie monsters, mutants, and aliens. He performed stunts and minor roles in blockbuster hits like Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. His breakthrough as a leading man arrived in 2009 when he donned the legendary hockey mask to play Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th reboot. His emotional, calculated approach to the character earned him a cult following and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Villain.

Notable Roles:
Mears is highly respected in the genre and sci-fi community, taking on roles that often require heavy makeup or prosthetic suits. Some of his most prominent projects include: The Hills Have Eyes II (2007) as Chameleon, Predators (2010) as the Classic Predator, Sleepy Hollow (2013–2017) as the Golem and Moloch, Swamp Thing (2019) as the titular protagonist Alec Holland/Swamp Thing.

Improv & Comedy Roots:
Despite his reputation for playing terrifying, mute killers and monsters, Mears has remained active in the comedy world. He credits his early improv and stand-up days with giving him the physical acting and character-development skills needed to portray physically intimidating roles. He continues to perform live improv and comedy shows in Los Angeles.
