Brief Biography:  John Alan Means, widely known by his stage name "Dr. Gonzo," is an American stand-up comedian and actor who rose to prominence in the 1980s. Famous for his blend of observational humor and original comedic songs accompanied by electric guitar, he was a staple of the San Francisco comedy boom.

Early Life:
His father, Dr. Jack Means, was a beloved local country physician whose dedication to his community left a lasting impact on John. After graduating high school, Means enrolled at Lincoln College in Illinois, where a chance role in a local play changed his trajectory. He discovered his knack for comedic timing and transferred to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Career & Rise to Fame:
Following a roommate's recommendation, he adopted the nickname "Gonzo"—a nod to the gritty, fearless "gonzo journalism" style of Hunter S. Thompson. Relocating to San Francisco in the late 1970s, Means quickly established himself as one of the busiest comics in the Bay Area. Highlights of his 1980s career include:
Live Performances: Headlining major comedy clubs across the country and opening for rock concerts.
Notable Lineups: Sharing the stage with comedy legends like Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams.
Television: Making appearances on programs like Playboy After Dark, Musical Comedy Tonight II, and The Cheryl Ladd Special: Souvenirs.

Hiatus & Later Life:
In 1990, the changing landscape of the comedy scene and a desire for a lifestyle change prompted Means to step away from stand-up. He returned to his native Mason City, Illinois, to become a businessman. He purchased a local pizza restaurant and subsequently opened a steakhouse. Despite his retirement from the relentless touring schedule, Means occasionally returned to the stage to perform at his own Midwestern comedy club, Mason City Limits, and made appearances at San Francisco's annual Comedy Day events.
