Brief Biography:
Al Madrigal is best known as a former correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Born and raised in San Francisco, he made a successful transition from working in human resources to a thriving stand-up career. He is the co-founder of the All Things Comedy podcast network.
Early Life and Career Beginnings:
He is of Mexican and Italian descent and grew up in the city's Inner Sunset District. After attending St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School (where he was salutatorian), he attended the University of San Francisco but left two credits shy of a degree. Before pursuing comedy, he spent ten years working at a family-run human resources and staffing agency. He began his stand-up career in the late 1990s, making a name for himself in the Bay Area. His natural, observational storytelling skills quickly earned him the nickname "The Latin Breeze".
Stand-Up Breakout and Television:
Madrigal’s career gained major momentum when he won a Jury Award for Best Stand-Up Comedian at the 2004 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado. This success led to appearances on numerous late-night shows, including Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Tonight Show. He is best known to television audiences for his five-season run on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which he joined in 2011 as the show's first "Senior Latino Correspondent". Outside of stand-up, his television credits include recurring and starring roles on:
Gary Unmarried (CBS), About A Boy (NBC), I'm Dying Up Here (Showtime), Lopez vs. Lopez (NBC). Madrigal has also released several critically acclaimed stand-up specials, including Why Is the Rabbit Crying? (2013) on Comedy Central and Shrimpin' Ain't Easy (2017) on Showtime.
Film Roles and Entrepreneurship:
Expanding into film, Madrigal has been featured in several major releases, such as Night School (2018) with Kevin Hart, The Way Back (2020) alongside Ben Affleck, and Sony's Morbius (2022). In the podcasting space, he partnered with fellow comedian Bill Burr in 2012 to co-found the All Things Comedy (ATC) podcast network. The network has grown to host over 50 shows and millions of listeners, operating as a platform built by comics for comics. He has also expanded into comic book writing, co-creating the Latin superhero series Primos.
