Brief Biography:
Jackie Martling is best known as the head writer and a cast member on The Howard Stern Show from 1983 to 2001. Nicknamed "Jackie the Joke Man," he is celebrated for his rapid-fire delivery of blue comedy and his signature on-air finale, "Stump the Joke Man".
Early Life & Education:
Birthplace: Born and raised in East Norwich, Long Island, New York.
Education: Graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 1966 and earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1971.
Breakthrough & Stand-Up Career:
Music & Early Comedy: Before doing stand-up, he toiled in the music business and performed in a trio called "The Off Hour Rockers".
Stand-Up Beginnings: He began his stand-up career in 1979, developing a legendary repertoire of dirty jokes and self-releasing early comedy albums like What Did You Expect? and Goin' Ape!.
The Howard Stern Show Era (1983–2001):
Joining the Show: In 1982, Martling blindly sent three of his self-produced comedy LPs to Howard Stern, who had just arrived at WNBC-AM in New York. Stern invited him as a guest, which eventually led to Martling becoming a full-time cast member and head writer in 1986.
Role: For 18 years, he was a staple of the show's ensemble, supplying Stern and the crew with material while laughing in the studio.
Departure: Martling left the show in 2001 in a contract dispute and was succeeded by comedian Artie Lange.
Later Career & Legacy:
Radio & Podcasts: From 2006 to 2014, he hosted his own show, Jackie's Joke Hunt, on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.
Media & Publications: He has released several albums (including Sgt. Pecker and Snart), authored books like his autobiography The Joke Man: Bow to Stern (2017), and has been featured in a number of comedy documentaries.
Touring: Martling continues to tour the country performing his live stand-up act and operating his classic joke hotline (516-922-WINE).
