Brief Biography:
Cheech Marin is best known for his counterculture cannabis-comedy act Cheech & Chong with Tommy Chong and as a versatile character actor and Chicano art advocate.
Early Life & The Birth of "Cheech":
His nickname "Cheech" was given to him by an uncle who looked at the infant in his crib and said he looked like a chicharrón (a fried pork skin). He grew up in South Central Los Angeles before his family relocated to Granada Hills, where he spent his teenage years. Marin attended California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where he majored in English literature. In 1967, during the Vietnam War, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to avoid the military draft.
The Cheech & Chong Era:
While in Vancouver, Marin met nightclub owner and musician Tommy Chong. The two formed the legendary comedy duo Cheech & Chong, rising to prominence during the counterculture movement of the 1970s and 1980s. They pioneered "stoner comedy" with a mix of stand-up, improvisational theater, and music. Their comedy albums were massive hits, with four Grammy Award nominations and a win in 1973 for Best Comedy Recording for Los Cochinos. In 1978, they released Up in Smoke, which became a cult classic and spawned a highly successful franchise of films.
Solo Career & Acting:
After Cheech & Chong disbanded in 1985, Marin successfully transitioned into solo film and television. He wrote, directed, and starred in the 1987 hit film Born in East L.A.. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he became a frequent collaborator with director Robert Rodriguez, appearing in films like From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) and the Spy Kids franchise. He also starred as Insp. Joe Dominguez opposite Don Johnson in the hit television series Nash Bridges (1996–2001).
Voice Acting & Philanthropy:
Marin has had a prolific voice-acting career, particularly with Disney and Pixar. His distinctive raspy voice is famous for characters such as: Tito in Oliver & Company (1988), Banzai the hyena in The Lion King (1994), Ramone in the Cars franchise (2006–2017). Outside of entertainment, Marin is a passionate patron and collector of Chicano art. His extensive private collection, built over decades, is now permanently housed at The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum in California, which officially opened its doors in 2022.
