Artie Lange is best known as an original cast member on FOX's sketch comedy show MADtv and for his nearly decade-long tenure as a co-host on The Howard Stern Show.
Early Life and Career Beginnings:
Arthur Steven Lange Jr. was born on October 11, 1967, in Union, New Jersey. He initially worked as a dockworker in the Port of Newark and a taxi driver to support his family after his father was paralyzed in a workplace accident. Lange debuted as a stand-up comedian in 1987, eventually breaking through as an original cast member on the first season of MADtv in 1995.
Breakthrough and Acting:
After departing MADtv, he was cast by comedian Norm Macdonald in the 1998 comedy film Dirty Work. This led to further acting roles, including appearances in the hit films Old School and Elf, as well as a co-starring role on ABC's The Norm Show. In 2006, Lange wrote, produced, and starred in his own independent feature, Artie Lange's Beer League.
The Howard Stern Show and Books:
In 2001, Lange joined The Howard Stern Show, replacing Jackie Martling. His nearly ten-year run on the show propelled him to mainstream fame. During this time, he also toured heavily as a stand-up, selling out Carnegie Hall, and released a New York Times #1 bestselling memoir, Too Fat to Fish, co-authored with Anthony Bozza.
Struggles with Addiction:
Lange has been highly vocal about his lifelong, severe battles with substance abuse and mental health. His struggles with drugs like cocaine and heroin have been widely documented, leading to rehab stints, arrests, and departures from his various projects.
