Born in Tollette, Arkansas, Luenell was adopted by relatives and raised in Castro Valley, California. Drawn to performing at a young age, she studied theater in junior college and completed her degree at California State University, East Bay. She developed her comedic chops and theatrical skills in the San Francisco Bay Area, cutting her teeth at the Oakland Ensemble Theatre. In the early 1990s, she became a recognizable local figure as a host and video DJ on Soul Beat TV, an influential Black-owned public-access station in Oakland.
