Brief Biography:
Jon Lovitz is best known for his five-season run on Saturday Night Live (1985–1990) and for creating iconic characters like Tommy Flanagan ("the Pathological Liar") and Master Thespian.
Early Life and Groundlings:
Lovitz was born into a Jewish family with Romanian, Hungarian, and Russian roots. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in drama from the University of California, Irvine, in 1979. Afterward, he honed his improvisational skills with the famous Los Angeles comedy troupe The Groundlings, where he developed his unique comedic style.
Saturday Night Live and Television:
In 1985, Lovitz joined the cast of NBC's Saturday Night Live, where he quickly became one of the show's standout performers and earned two consecutive Emmy Award nominations. Some of his most memorable SNL creations included:
Tommy Flanagan: The pathological liar famous for his catchphrase, "Yeah! That's the ticket!" , Master Thespian: A pompous, highly dramatic actor with the catchphrase, "Acting!", Hanukkah Harry, The Devil.
Following his departure from SNL, Lovitz established a prolific television career. He was the first prominent guest star on the hit sitcom Friends (as Steve). He also became a highly sought-after voice actor, voicing the title character in the cult animated series The Critic and providing voices for iconic Simpsons characters like Artie Ziff.
