Carol Leifer is best known for her celebrated stand-up career, writing for iconic shows like Seinfeld (which was partly inspired by her life), and her work as an Emmy Award-winning producer on Hacks.
Stand-up Career and Rise to Fame:
Leifer began her stand-up career in the late 1970s while studying theater at Harpur College (now Binghamton University). She frequently performed at legendary New York comedy clubs like Catch a Rising Star, the Comic Strip, and the Improv. Her big break arrived when David Letterman saw her perform at the Comic Strip. This led to 25 appearances on Late Night with David Letterman—the record for the most visits by any guest. Over the years, she has also starred in five of her own stand-up specials on networks like HBO, Showtime, and Comedy Central.
Television Writing and Producing:
Transitioning into television, Leifer became one of the most prolific comedy writers in the industry. Her impressive television resume includes:
Seinfeld: Wrote six episodes and served as a story editor. The hit character Elaine Benes was partially based on her.
