He trained under Del Close at the ImprovOlympic and became an ensemble member of the Second City Theater Northwest.

Koechner broke into mainstream television as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (1995–1996) and as a regular sketch performer on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in the mid-1990s. He gained widespread recognition for two highly memorable roles: the loud, mustachioed sportscaster Champ Kind in the Anchorman films (starting in 2004) and the crass, boorish traveling salesman Todd Packer on NBC’s The Office (2005). Outside of his television and film work, Koechner is an active touring stand-up comedian. In the late 1990s, he teamed up with Dave "Gruber" Allen to create "The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show," a popular live musical comedy act that performed at Hollywood clubs like Largo and was adapted into a television series on Comedy Central in 2007.
