Tom Kenny is recognized as the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants. Born in Syracuse, New York, he has shaped modern animation for decades with roles in Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls, and Rocko's Modern Life. He began in stand-up and sketch comedy, notably starring in HBO’s Mr. Show.
Early Life and Stand-Up Comedy:
Born Thomas James Kenny on July 13, 1962, he grew up in Syracuse with a love for drawing and record albums. While still in high school, he met lifelong friend and fellow comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, and the two began performing stand-up comedy together. Kenny spent about eight years touring the country as a stand-up comedian, which led to appearances on late-night television and cable comedy programs in the 1980s and 1990s.
Television and Film Career:
Kenny's quick wit and acting ability transitioned from the stand-up stage to sketch comedy. He was a featured cast member on the Fox sketch series The Edge (1992–1993), and later starred in the critically acclaimed HBO sketch program Mr. Show with Bob and David (1995–1998). It was on The Edge that he met his future wife, actress and comedian Jill Talley. He also appeared in a variety of live-action films, including How I Got Into College (1989) and Bobcat Goldthwait's Shakes the Clown (1991).
Iconic Voice Acting:
While his live-action career was taking off, Kenny's dynamic vocal range made him a staple in voice acting. He broke out in animation by voicing Heffer Wolfe on Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life. In 1999, his career skyrocketed when he was cast as the title character in Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants. In addition to the optimistic sea sponge, Kenny voices numerous other characters on the show, including Gary the Snail, the French Narrator, and SpongeBob's dad, Harold, while also playing the live-action pirate Patchy the Pirate.
