Brief Biography:
Kendrick Kang-Joh Jeong is best known for his roles in The Hangover trilogy and the television series Community. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the eccentric gangster Leslie Chow in The Hangover (2009) and later created, wrote, and produced his own sitcom, Dr. Ken (2015–2017).
Early Life and Education:
Born in to South Korean immigrant parents, Jeong was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was an academic achiever, graduating from Walter Hines Page High School at age 16 and earning a Youth of the Year award. He completed his undergraduate degree at Duke University in 1990 and obtained his M.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1995.
Medical Career and Shift to Comedy:
While completing his internal medicine residency in New Orleans, Jeong won the "Big Easy Laff-Off" in 1995, which was judged by industry experts who encouraged him to move to Los Angeles. He moved to California in 1998, practicing medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills while performing stand-up comedy at night.
Breakthrough and Career:
Jeong's breakout role came as Dr. Kuni in the 2007 film Knocked Up. He subsequently left his medical practice to act full-time, taking on roles in:
Film: Role Models (2008), The Hangover Trilogy (2009–2013), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), and Crazy Rich Asians (2018).
Television: Ben Chang on Community (2009–2015), creator/star of Dr. Ken (2015–2017), and as a panelist on The Masked Singer (2019–present).
