Brief Biography:  Arte Johnson was best known as a breakout star on the NBC sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Over a 50-year career, he showcased a mastery of accents and physical comedy.

Early Life and Career Beginnings:
Johnson grew up in a middle-class family in Chicago, Illinois. He entered Austin High School at age 12 and enrolled at the University of Illinois at age 16, earning a degree in radio journalism.
After college, Johnson served briefly in the U.S. Army before moving to New York City. He worked in publicity for Viking Press. In 1954, he impulsively joined an audition line during his lunch break. He surprisingly won his first professional acting role in a Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, Johnson established himself as a reliable character actor. He secured guest roles on classic television programs including The Twilight Zone, The Andy Griffith Show, and Bewitched.

The Laugh-In Breakthrough (1968–1973):
Johnson achieved nationwide fame when he joined the original cast of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In in 1968. He specialized in playing distinct, recurring characters. His performance earned him a Primetime Emmy Award in 1969.

Later Career, Voice Work:
Johnson left Laugh-In in 1971 due to burnout. He remained active across film and television through the early 2000s. Notable roles included playing Renfield in the 1979 comedy film Love at First Bite. He transition extensively into voice acting for animation. He voiced characters for The Smurfs, Animaniacs, and Justice League Unlimited. He also recorded more than 80 audiobooks.
