He gained widespread recognition as a versatile performer, transitioning from a successful burlesque and stand-up comedy career to winning an Academy Award for a dramatic film role. He was known for his energetic "Ho Ho" catchphrase and his popular "Never Got a Dinner" routine on celebrity roasts.

Early Life and Career:
He began working at age 16 as a singing bellhop at Ryan's Tavern in the Bronx. His red hair and the large buttons on his uniform inspired the nickname "Red Buttons".
Borscht Belt & Burlesque: He honed his comedic skills in the Catskills' "Borscht Belt" and worked in Minsky’s Burlesque.
Broadway & War Service: He made his Broadway debut in Vickie (1942). During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces, appearing in the Broadway show Winged Victory and later entertaining troops in Europe.

Television and Film Success:
The Red Buttons Show: In 1952, he starred in The Red Buttons Show on CBS, which was highly successful for three years and won him an Emmy for Best Comedian.
Academy Award: He shocked audiences by taking a serious role in Sayonara (1957), for which he won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
Film Highlights: He appeared in over 80 films, including Hatari! (1962), The Longest Day (1962), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), and The Poseidon Adventure (1972).
