Brief Biography:
Carol Burnett is an iconic American comedian, actress, and writer, best known for her groundbreaking variety show, The Carol Burnett Show. Over a career spanning seven decades, she became the first woman to host a major TV variety series and has received nearly every major entertainment honor, including seven Emmy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Early Life and "Rags-to-Riches":
Childhood: Born in San Antonio, Texas, she moved to Hollywood during the Great Depression. She was raised primarily by her grandmother, Mabel "Nanny" White, in a one-room apartment as both of her parents struggled with alcoholism.
Education: After graduating from Hollywood High School, she attended UCLA to study journalism but switched to theater after discovering a love for performance.
The Benefactor: While a junior at UCLA, an anonymous donor gave her a $1,000 interest-free loan to move to New York and pursue acting, under the condition that she help others if she became successful.
Rise to Stardom:
Broadway Breakout: She achieved massive success in the 1959 Broadway musical Once Upon a Mattress, earning her first Tony nomination.
The Garry Moore Show: From 1959 to 1962, she was a regular on this variety program, where she won her first Emmy and developed her signature "cleaning lady" character.
The Carol Burnett Show (1967–1978): Defying network skepticism that a woman couldn't lead a variety show, she headlined the legendary CBS series for 11 seasons. The show featured a beloved ensemble including Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner.
Notable Later Works:
Film Roles: She starred in movies such as Annie (as Miss Hannigan), The Four Seasons, and Noises Off.
Recent Successes: Burnett has remained active into her 90s, with acclaimed roles in Better Call Saul (2022), the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale (2024), and guesting on Hacks (2025).
The Carol Burnett Award: In 2019, the Golden Globes established a lifetime achievement award in her name, with Burnett herself as the first recipient.
