Bird was discovered at an orphanage at the age of eight by a touring vaudeville act. She spent her childhood touring theater circuits and later formed a duo known as the King Sisters. Before transitioning to screen acting in the 1950s, she performed in cabaret, regional theater, and musical comedies like Show Boat and Girl Crazy.
