Brief Biography:
Jay Scott Greenspan known professionally as Jason Alexander, is an American actor and comedian. Over the course of his career, he has received an Emmy Award and a Tony Award as well as nominations for four Golden Globe Awards. Alexander made his Broadway debut originating the role of Joe in Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along in 1981. He remained active on Broadway acting in the musicals The Rink in 1984 and the Neil Simon play Broadway Bound in 1986.
Early Life and Stage Career:
Birth: Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Jewish parents, he changed his name at age 15 to Jason Alexander" as a teenager, borrowing his father's first name.
Growing up in Livingston, New Jersey, Alexander initially dreamed of becoming a magician but shifted his focus to theater after being told his hands were too small for professional card magic. He attended Boston University to study drama, but left during his third year to pursue professional acting in New York City.
Career Highlights:
Broadway Success: Before TV stardom, he was a decorated stage actor. He won a Tony Award in 1989 for Best Actor in a Musical for Jerome Robbins' Broadway.
Seinfeld (1989–1998): Portraying George Costanza, a character largely based on show co-creator Larry David, Alexander earned seven consecutive Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations.
Film and Voice Acting: Notable film roles include the villainous Phillip Stuckey in Pretty Woman (1990) and Mauricio in Shallow Hal (2001). He also voiced the gargoyle Hugo in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the titular character in the animated series Duckman.
Recent Work: In 2020, he won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Original Song for "The Bad Guys?" on Brainwashed by Toons. He recently made his Broadway directing debut with the comedy The Cottage in 2023.
