Brief Biography:
Roy Atwell was an American actor, comedian, composer, and screenwriter, best known as the voice of Doc in Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Educated at the Sargent School of Acting, he had a prolific career on Broadway, in early film, and as a vaudeville performer.
Key Facts and Career:
Atwell initially trained as a serious dramatic actor at the Sargent School of Acting. His transition to comedy was entirely accidental; during a Broadway performance, he nervously flubbed a line about birds "twittering in the tree tops" as "twits are birdering in the tree flops". The audience's massive laughter convinced him to embrace this "spoonerism" style as his professional trademark.
Broadway & Stage: Appeared in productions such as The Little Missus, The Mimic World, The Firefly, and How's Your Health?.
Film Career: Appeared in films including The Heart Specialist (1922), Souls For Sale (1923), and The Fleet's In (1942).
Disney Role: Provided the voice for Doc, the leader of the dwarfs, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Composer: Member of ASCAP and composer of the popular song "Some Little Bug is Going to Bite You".
Atwell was known for his distinct, stuttering comedic style. He joined the Fortune Gallo Opera Company and was a veteran of the vaudeville stage before transitioning to voice work and Hollywood films.
